Pet peeve of the day

While I applaud the efforts of retails stores, especially groceries stores, promoting reusable bags, I have one beef.  Why do I have to bag my own groceries just because I bring my own bags?  It’s not that I’m being a primadonna.  It’s just the principle.  If I use their plastic bags, then they’ll bag it for me.  Doesn’t make sense.  Also, as they wait for me to dig out my money while I’m bagging my own groceries, some have the nerve to appear impatient because I don’t have my payment ready!

Do I expect people to come into my job and read my emails for me? Nope.

Bag my damn groceries.

as a grocery store cashier, i don’t mind bagging, despite the fact that my particular store’s registers are decidedly not built with the ability to do so effectively in mind. however, when people are just standing there watching me attempt to scan, sort out, and bag their enormous order when they could easily be helping me…that pisses me off. these bags are YOURS, you can help me! don’t act like i’m too slow when you’re not doing a damn thing to help me.

My point is that first of all, I use the store’s own reusable bags. And they also offer reward points when you use the bags to promote the use of them even more. And secondly, in my experience, it’s the cashiers that either watch me bag and not help out at all BUT instead start to ring in the next customers purchases and push it over to my stuff before I’m finished, even though I try to rush. The few that I do get that offer to do it, I still help them. And the stores that do have those little bag hangers, it’s easier for the cashier to bag the stuff properly (eggs on bottom, etc) than me reaching awkwardly over the Debit card machine. And thirdly, I tend to “flyer shop” a lot and I like to see the purchases being rung through because sometimes the sale items don’t always scan properly and I can’t look at that if I’m bagging the groceries and I’ve been burned a couple times after I’ve paid. And finally, the main point is if bagging groceries is part of the job when plastic bags are being used, I don’t see why it’s any different if I use reusable bags.

I was thinking of calling you for the longest time but by the time the kid’s asleep it’s 1am-ish in TO! Reading your blog is not enough!!! But this one is my favourite post of them all…”Bag my damn groceries”! LOL! Now that I’m a mother I “pretend” to be all frazzled and usually this works to get the cashier to do it for me! One of the few perks of procreation :)

Especially since I don’t blog so often anymore …

You can call me at that time on the weekends. I’m usually up :)
